When choosing a protein powder, many of us have been guilty of just looking at the grams of protein on a label and calling it a day. But what about the actual ingredients?
When looking at the small print on a protein tub, it can be surprising. You'll often find a long list of things you've never even heard of - Lecithins, Sucralose, Xantham Gum, "Natural" flavours (whatever that means) - all things you'd never find in your own kitchen, let alone nature.
So why do we make the compromise when it comes to Protein Powder? Something which many of us consume every day.
At Onyst, our philosophy is simple: if it isn't real food, it doesn't go in.
Let's compare the common industry approach to the 100% food-based approach we've taken.
1. The Flavour
THEM: "Natural" and artificial Flavours
This is one of the industry's biggest loopholes. Both artificial and even "natural" flavours rely on a multitude of processing aids like solvents, preservatives and emulsifiers that never appear on the label.
What's worse, these flavourings, (yes even the "natural" ones) almost always use Maltodextrin as a carrier agent. Maltodextrin is a modified carbohydrate which actually spikes blood sugar faster than refined table sugar. Despite this, because of the vagueness around flavourings, this maltodextrin does not need to be declared in the ingredients, nor does it need to listed as sugar on the nutritional table!
ONYST: Real Cacao, Vanilla Bean or Peanuts
We have three flavours, each with a unique ingredient that brings the taste to life:
Cacao: A nutrient-dense superfood in its least processed form - non-alkalised cacao retains the highest levels of flavonoids, iron, and mood-boosting compounds - whilst also delivering an indulgent, chocolatey taste.
Vanilla Bean: We use the entire ground vanilla pod. No extracts, no alcohol, no carriers. Just pure, antioxidant-rich Madagascan vanilla.
Peanuts: Pesticide-free, pressed and ground down into a nutrient rich and flavoursome powder.
2. The Sweetener
THEM: Sucralose, Xylitol, Stevia extracts
- Man-made compounds or heavily processed extracts that have only recently been introduced into modern diets, with long-term effects unknown.
- They train your palate to crave hyper-sweet foods and dull your sensitivity to natural sweetness from real, healthy foods like fruit.
- They offer zero nutritional value.
ONYST: Sweetness from Real Foods (Dates & Coconut Nectar)
- Dates: We use real dates that have been ground down to a fine powder. They provide natural, unrefined sweetness along with fibre, potassium, and B vitamins for steady energy.
- Coconut Nectar: Sourced from the sap of the coconut palm tree, coconut nectar is a natural, unrefined syrup rich in minerals. In its crystallised form, it offers a delicately sweet, low-glycemic alternative to refined sugars.
Unlike modern sweeteners, these foods have been consumed safely for generations. When consumed in modest amounts alongside protein, fibre and fat (as in Onyst), these naturally occurring sugars support balance rather than disrupt it.
3. The Protein
THEM: Whey Concentrates, Pea, or Soy Isolates
Plant-based proteins:
- Often sourced from large-scale industrial agriculture that has heavy pesticide/herbicide use and can be particularly high in heavy metals.
- Isolated plant proteins often have high concentrations of anti-nutrients like lectins, phytates or oxalates, which can cause digestive issues and block the absorption of protein and minerals.
- Gritty, unappetising texture.
Whey proteins:
- Given it is a byproduct of the cheesemaking process, it is a processed dairy product, which leads to bloating, digestive issues and skin issues for many.
- Its BCAA content is strong, however, it lacks amino acids like proline and glycine, which help to keep your gut, skin, bones and joints healthy but are under consumed in modern diets.
ONYST: Grass-Fed Beef Protein & Free-Range Whole Egg
Grass-Fed Beef: Pasture raised in Scandinavia on KRAV certified farms, our beef protein is a natural source of complete protein and animal based nutrients like collagen and gelatine - supporting strength, metabolism, gut health, and your skin, hair, bones, and joints.
It is much easier to digest than whey or plant-based alternatives and delivers a delicious creamy texture when coupled with our other ingredients.
Free-Range Egg: Nature’s multivitamin, containing every single vitamin except vitamin C, as well as high-quality complete protein, healthy fats and vital nutrients like choline - helping support brain function, hormone health and keep daily nutrient intake on track.
We only source from European farms where hens have continuous access to the great outdoors in the daytime, where they are free to forage for insects, worms, seeds, plants and grass for example.
With two forms of animal based protein, the amino acid profile of Onyst is both complete and well balanced.
Verdict: The Choice is Yours
As outlined, many modern powders offer a high-protein count, or cheap price-tag, but ask you to compromise on gut-disrupting additives, hidden ingredients, and a list of problems you didn't sign up for.
Alternatively, you can choose a new standard. One that prioritises your health over and above everything. A protein made from 100% real foods.
